Folds, Ben : Songs for SilvermanThe first single off of the long awaited new album from Ben Folds, Songs for Silverman. I'm so pumped for this album and this song just sets me up even more. I first heard it live, then recorded (but bad quality) and now I just downloaded off of iTunes and it's amazing.neverwinter nights v1.10
The song really sounds like an Elton John song - at least at first (much like a lot of Ben's songs). The intro to the song gets me everytime - I could almost just listen to it looped over and over again (luckily, it's the core of ths song). It's typical Ben fare in that it follows his formula. Verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus with harmonies - the way I like it. The "bah-bahs" at the end are mixed in so well - not too loud, but loud enough that they change the feeling.neverwinter nights v1.10
The song is written to a friend who got pushed out of the singer's life when he started a bad relationship with a girl. It's not exactly pulled from Ben's life - at least word-for-word. Here is his explanation of it, from billboard.com:neverwinter nights v1.10
"It's about a close friend of mine who's recovering from being under the influence of a crazy girlfriend," says Folds. "I had this mental image of him flying back to reality, landing at the airport and needing a ride back to the life he left behind."neverwinter nights v1.10
It's a great metaphor for how it is when you leave your friends behind for something bad and they still take you back when it all falls apart (sort of "prodigal son"-ey).neverwinter nights v1.10
