I've always loved The New Pornographers and when I saw this album in the stores I jumped right on it - even though I think it made my bank account go in the negative. The owner of the record store (Square Records in Akron, OH) played the opening track for me and I bought it right there.

This song gets in your freakin' head due to the rhythm of the lyrics and the music. It's such a good song. The lazy guitars and slow drums make for an almost chant-like experience. The whistling (I've always had a thing for whistling in pop songs) perfectly complements the arrangement.

As for what the song's about? Your guess is as good as mine. I've never been great at figuring out what songs mean - I'll be honest about that. I do my best by studying the lyrics, matching the verses with the chorus and listening to the mood of the music. I'm lost on this one though. How about I just put the lyrics up and you figure it out:

Come to me, please, all these years fall through,
Through the cracks and now this perfect view,
On the upside, both sides win.
On the downside, we buy, we pull through,
Through the pouring choices rich kids choose,
On a landslide, you ride in.

Drink to me, babe, then.
Think of me, babe, then.
Lady, we both know what the scores don't show,
Drink to me, babe, then

Now it's come home, held on, held the truth,
Like a threat to point-blank eyes as proof,
You were too shy to lie to.
We're offended, shocked our plan would fail,
Now you've wandered farther from the trail,
On a landslide you ride in.

Does that help you?

I first heard this song on the Waiting for a Want EP available only through iTunes right before his Want Two came out. He talked about it at one of his shows that we went too and I couldn't wait to download it.

It's a great song musically. The chorus girls are a great touch - the slow guitar plucking is moving. I like it a lot. There's a part in the bridge where he goes high and it just sounds so powerful. The only part I would change is where he says, "he will fall from the stars/ Studio 54/ and appear on the sands/ of Fire Island shores." I would take out "shores." I know it rhymes with "54" but the way he sings "stars" sort of rhymes with the way he sings "4." It would then make sense that you rhyme "stars" with "4" and "sands" with "land." Don't ask, just do it next time Ruf'.

The song's meaning, I'm sure, has been debated by Christian fans. I have some friends that won't listen to the song, and some that won't listen to Rufus because of it. First, they think that he's singing about himself being the messiah but that's debunked in the bridge where he says, "no, it will not be me." People also think that he's saying that Jesus was gay - which is wrong too. The key to the meaning is in the bridge.

My friend came up with a great theory on the meaning. He says that it's about people saying that Rufus is going to change the world's mind about gays with his music. Rufus is saying that he isn't going to be that person (no I won't be the one/) but that he's just readying people for that person (Rufus the Baptist I be/). The rest of the lyrics are just imagery and metaphor.

I really feel sorry for homosexuals having to deal with all of the hatred that they get. While I don't agree with homosexuality, I do hope that we as heterosexuals (and christans, if you are) can love these people just the same, regardless of their choices. I've made my choices - feel free to make yours.

My friend Dave hipped me to these guys. They are a great group from the 80s that were heavily influenced by The Smiths. I was looking for lyrics to this song and I found some reviews on the Amazon website describing this as "jangle pop."

I was trying to figure out this song. The first verse and certain lines throughout make me feel like it's about someone who really admires an artist's work (words that form a phrase/ could not convey the meaning/ of what this man has done/ in a painting on a canvas). Other parts of the song sound like the singer wants to be with a girl he sees that he doesn't know. Maybe the girl is the artist's work? Ha. I don't know.

It's hard to explain the sound of the song without saying that it sounds like every other "Morissey" inspired song. It sounds like it was recorded in a cave - very atmospheric. It "speaks" the 80s.

It's a great song if you like the 80s and The Ocean Blue are a great band if you like The Smiths.

This is the first song from The Magnetic Fields that I really enjoyed. I was listening at work in passing and this song struck me - partly for the fact that other people around were asking me what it was (they think my music is weird).

The lead singer's voice always reminds me of Neil Hannon from The Divine Comedy probably only because it's low - also a bit of Johnny Cash thrown in there (especially this song). I love unique voices in music - it can really draw me to something I wouldn't otherwise like.

This song reminds me of a Johnny Cash song because of it's folky sound. I always think I don't like Johnny Cash and then I hear a song like this that reminds me of a Johnny Cash song that I've heard and I always have to go back. I'm going to be getting some Johnny Cash stuff but I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

The song is just a love song about how he can't seem to get it right. The chicken metaphor is great (who'd fall in love/ with a chicken with it's head cut off) and it's kind of cute actually. This song is just fun all around especially with the funny phrases that the lead singer says after each verse.

This is one of those songs that makes me want to learn guitar even more than I already do. I feel like I would be able to play this song and I know all of the words and can sing along. I always picture myself doing open mics playing songs like this. It makes me feel cool.*

*I just realized that this review reads like a little kid wrote it.

This song is credited to Ben Folds Five for a demo they made in 1990. I don't know if it's them or if it's just Ben Folds or what. Either way it's my favorite song by Ben Folds (Five). Ironically, it was never recorded (outside of this demo).

I love it so much and I'm trying to figure out what it means. I looked over at Song Meanings but they didn't have anything beyond the lyrics and a description of what the term "Lydian Song" means. I know it's about a guy who can't say what's on his mind to a girl. I feel like it's his girlfriend and it has to do with either continuing their relationship or ending it - they are at some sort of crossroads. The song is a bit somber so it sounds like maybe it's ending. Check out the lyrics and then leave a comment on what you think.

The piano in this song is exactly what I like in piano music. It's so pretty - a lot of high notes wrapped around some mids and it's almost hard to distinguish which keys he is hitting (classic Ben). It's a demo so the quality isn't great but you can hear it fine.

His singing is great too (for a demo at least). He sings over the piano so well and the last chorus ends on a high note that gets in your heart. My only gripe is that he doesn't hold enough - instead he goes up one note at the end and it ruins the feeling a tiny bit (for me at least).

I'm not sure where you would be able to get this song off hand but check out one of the file-sharing programs and I'm sure you'll have no problems. And make sure you do too..

A Chach is Just a Chach - Written by me and Dave Jurca (Al Gore Rhythms), music by me

Fire and Going Back are songs that we recorded for my brother's demo. He is currently in talks with some people in Atlanta and hopefully that actually means something. He's a real slick singer.

My Shoes Hurt is a song I wrote as a Christmas present for my fiance since I didn't have any money this year. Please excuse the wackness of it - I wanted to make the song faster than it was (my voice sounds better on fast songs) but the sample sounded to tinny sped up.

A Chach is Just a Chach is a song that me and my friend wrote in one night on a whim. My other friend has a studio in his house and we decided that it would be fun to do a rap song (my friend doesn't rap - you WILL be able to tell). I like the beat a lot and chances are, if you've been to my site, you've heard it before. It's a really funny song but not something that I would ever release beyond this website.

Disregard the quality of these songs please.

Have fun!

The Streets is Lonely

The Streets is lonely.
The Streets has no friends.
The Streets has no name, no family, no distant relatives – The Streets isn’t even eligible for the Big Brother program.

The Streets is hungry.
I once invited The Streets over for dinner but The Streets declined – hmph, makes me think The Streets doesn’t want to get happy.
I told The Streets to buck up saying that he had plenty of friends – the Roads… The Roads is your friend, I said – The Streets told me that The Streets doesn’t relate to the Roads saying, “The Roads is a jerk.”

The Streets is desperate.
I offered to go on Match.com forTthe Streets but The Streets said not to bother because people on there only want romance or a good lay – The Streets is fine in that department. I didn’t believe The Streets and asked The Streets to divulge. The Streets is a gentleman.

The Streets is cold.
I offered the Streets my jacket but The Streets didn’t want to trouble me. I begged The Streets to take it.

The Streets is warm.

The Streets is rude.
I was hesitant but I suggested that maybe The Streets should join a gang – The Streets said that no honest, self-respecting The Streets would join a gang – now the Roads? That’s a different story…
The Streets went on to tell me the difference between The Streets and The Roads – I told The Streets that I didn’t give a crap – I was just trying to help The Streets feel better – and also to shut up.

The Streets is quiet.

The Streets is lazy.
Maybe The Streets should get a job? The Streets already has a job – "Being lonely," said The Streets.
I told The Streets to stop with that nonsense and seriously – get-a-job. Start slow – maybe a paper route, flipping burgers at Wendy’s, CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
The Streets asked if any Fortune 500 companies were hiring – “No you jackass, I was only kidding. No wonder The Streets has no friends – The Streets is way too gullible.”

The Streets is heartless.
There’s The Streets problem – The Streets has no heart. Does The Streets remember the story of the tin man? The Tin man wanted a heart so bad – The Streets interrupted me saying I was gay for watching The Wizard of Oz.

The Streets is a homophobe.
“No fag better ever look at me in the wrong way.” I told The Streets not every guy that looks at The Streets wants to have sex with The Streets. The Streets accused me, again, of being gay for looking at The Streets and told me that I better not try to have sex with The Streets.

The Streets is an a-hole.
I left The Streets’ house that day in anger because The Streets wouldn’t listen to me – and plus, that whole gay thing. I had had enough.

The Streets is sorry.
“Yes, The Streets?” The Streets apologizes for it’s remarks and asks me to forgive The Streets.

The Streets is a p-ssy.
“Sorry sucko! I’m gone.”

The Streets is lonely.

Alter Ego

This game is so cool. It's based on an old DOS game of the same name. You start from birth and pick choices based on scenarios that they give you. It's not exactly perfect but it is fun to take your own person all the way until death.

Check it out.

PS.
just make sure to avoid all strangers when you are a little child. You will be kidnapped, tortured and then killed.
I made this entry to talk about this cool new program that lets you take screencaps of your DVD movies using the Apple DVD Player. It's called DVD Capture. I also made the entry so that I could post this screenshot on a message board:
