If you go to the above link, you’ll see that I’m selling my Shigeru Miyamoto signed Super Famicom. For those that don’t know, I went to New York back in 2005 to meet Miyamoto-san, the creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, etc. I brought my Super Famicom (the Japanese Super Nintendo) for him to sign because I didn’t just want some generic postcard with an autograph. I believe the Super Nintendo to be the best video game system of all time and who better to christen it but the best game designer of all time…
I’ve been reading the comments on websites that have linked to the auction and it’s pretty clear that a lot of people don’t understand why I’m selling it. Well, I’ll clear it up for them:
I have way too much stuff in my life but I don’t have enough room for it. When I have to assess the the usefulness of the stuff I have, this Super Famicom is at the bottom of the list. I never play it; I never even look at it. It just gets put with the rest of the boxes of crap I have to move into a new useless closet every time we change apartments. You could say that the item’s historical value alone is worth the ownership and I would agree with that. But, owning things isn’t one of my priorities right now and so the value is different for me, just as it is for every other person in the world.
I’ve decided to keep the video game stuff that I play most, which is everything from the current generation. I have some old video game systems that I may keep around but I doubt it. If I really, really want to play Mario Paint, I can just download an emulator and the ROM. I don’t need to play it on my HD TV. I really don’t even keep current games anymore except for stuff like Rock Band that is fun for parties. I mostly just use GameFly and if something is worth having for multiple plays then I keep it.
That’s really the main reason I’m selling it. I’m sure if I waited I could get more money but who cares? I’m not trying to retire. It’s not like if I wait 10 years I’m going to get a million dollars or something. And is that really the point? I’m not greedy. I don’t need the money.
Basically, the whole point of having this thing was that I got to meet one of my heroes and selling this piece of gaming history isn’t going to change that experience at all. The pictures speak for themselves…
If miyamoto knew about this…he signed it for you what an ass you are to sell it on ebay.
If he had known it was only to make a quick buck selling it on ebay…he would never have signed it. You just ruined the meeting you had with your hero he will now surely despise you.
If I had such an item I wouldn’t even sell it for 10 million dollars I would keep it no matter what, it has no monetary value money can’t buy such a gem. Maybe it’s because I’m not an american like you with strange values that thinks that money is more important than anything else. Maybe you’re just an ass. Maybe both.
I really understand and agreed with you
Despite the fact that I tried to talk you out of selling it :), I really respect where you are coming from and I hope others will do the same.
AMERICA RULES DUDE
“I’ve decided to keep the video game stuff that I play most”
Definitely: Wise words. That´s what everybody should do.
I do agree with you.
Go ahead !!

“If miyamoto knew about this…he signed it for you what an ass you are to sell it on ebay.”
Shut up. The guy still has the experience, and that’s what matters the most. Like he stated, he doesn’t want to keep it if it’s just going to keep up space. People view priorites differently, and if you don’t play something or even use it for anything (just have it sit in the closet) what’s the point in keeping it? Especially if you don’t care about it’s monetary value.
You are crazy man =)
I both respect your decision and wish I were in the position to make it… because then I’d have the signed super famicom ;p
As for the person who “called him out” for “making a quick buck” or whatever, dude, he clearly didn’t do it FOR that. It’s an externality of the experience.
some of you people are pretty jealous ^^just let him do whatever he want with that old machine glook with the sell m8
I don’t understand how a guy that keeps his Super Famicom and games in good condition with all the boxes and manuals for 15 years and goes through the trouble of meeting his hero and gets him to autograph it can simply say “I don’t have enough room for it.” Sounds totally lame and I find it unbelievable.
Well, I bought the Super Famicom used on eBay about 6 years ago and when I bought it, you know where it went? In the closet with everything else I never use.
I have different opinions on this…it is such a shame to be selling but I have also sold most of my old game collection as it was taking up space and simply wasn’t being used (and is also a pain when it comes to move time!!)…if someone wants to buy it and keep it in a box somewhere then leave them to it…as for the seller - it is his SFC whether signed by ‘god’ or not so let him do as he pleases. He may live regret it or he may not but ultimately it is HIS decision so don’t be so narrow minded to think you can freely criticise.
I keep the things I play on and clear out the stuff I don’t. At least I have had the experience and pleasure of owning it/them in the first place…
“Its better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all”
However, I for one have and will for the long term future keep my very own SFC!
Good luck with the sale!
Gotta say I support you on this decision. If something means something to you, keep it. If it’s something cool but ultimately takes up space, let someone else have it who will appreciate it more. I don’t like collecting, I like owning things I use and enjoy. I would definitely be doing the same thing you are. Don’t people bug you. They’re just jealous.
And, yes, SNES is the greatest ever.
El mundo está loco…. No puedo estar más de acuerdo contigo….
Wow! I hope it ends up in a good place where it will continue to be taken care of. I collect video games, too. I don’t know if I will ever get to a point were I would let go of anything though. I know what some things are worth and something like that I would probably end up putting it in some sort of a show case and passing it on to my kids. Of course, I may just be bent on feelings of obsession, too!
Hey man, I totally understand you. As a matter of fact, I share the same problem and have been dealing with it the same way…eBay. I have sold about half my stuff so far, and hope to have sold the rest by the end of April. (For anyone interested, my seller ID is holywarriortim…shameless plug…lol)
But you are right, if ya want to play it, emulators are a dime a dozen. I might have kept the Super Famicom though if it were me, but then, I don’t know your situation either…
Anyways, good luck with you auction. I hope it brings you a lot of money (which I think it will). I just wish I had enough to bid on it myself.
Nathan, you’re doing a great thing by giving another Miyamoto fan who loves gaming as much as you obviously do the opportunity to share part of your experience.
I normally never comment on anything, but I thought the reaction of that first dude was ridiculous and wanted to point out that you’re doing a really nice thing for someone in addition to your personal reasons for selling.
Cheers.
Good to see there are also people who can actually understand. But hey, what did you expect; we live in a more or less material community. Most are not even going to understand that the experience will still be there and that the autograph present on that console will never be as special to them as it was for you.
I think you got a wonderful experience there, and one I am most definitely jealous of. It must have been great to meet someone with such an impressive list of games on his name. It must have been even more great to get such a great photo out of it.
I hope your Nintendo will sell for lots, and I hope the memory of your experience will stay vivid. Good luck on selling it ;)!
You’re doing the right thing by selling it to somebody else who would really appreciate it.
[...] Why he’s selling it [...]
Well, now you know how to get people to leave comments on your blog….
Dude, it is so obvious you got this picture taken with view to sell in the future (ie. prove its real), why not a picture of you and your hero instead?
Well, originally they told everyone that they couldn’t come around the table and take pictures with him. Of course, everyone after me did. They rushed me so fast. I was second in line.
That is one thing I regret - that I didn’t press the issue.
[...] at the seller’s location, I might have anticipated this coming. Nathan writes a bit about his motivation behind selling the system. I can totally sympathize with his concern – just having too much stuff to cart around. Some [...]
FROG, Nathan is not american… He’s an spanish guy living yn Tokyo… XDDD…
Come on, boy… yo can’t be so Nerd… I would buy it too…
I feel like Dlv is trying to be funny, but just in case, I am American and I live in Ohio. Now that that’s cleared up, AMERICA RULES DUDE.
I don’t get how you can say you have ‘no room for it’ sell all the games and controls and stuff…but you can’t find ONE spot to keep it? Like on top of a shelf or T.V. or something?
You’re right. I’ll put it on the shelf next to the porcelain clown statue or if it doesn’t look right, I’ll just put it in a magazine rack.
Can you please email me when you put your porcelain clown statue on eBay?!?
And your magazine rack.
No can do. You’ll just have to watch my store on eBay.
What in the world gives you the right to tell him what to do? He owns this item, some idiots want to put thousand dollars in order to get it, you can’t know he perhaps needs money, what are you going to tell him? He should keep this item and keep him money problems in the same time?
“Maybe it’s because I’m not an american like you with strange values that thinks that money is more important than anything else.”
First you are racist, you should apologise to the US people (I’m french and I’m just shocked by your sentence, in france you would have been slapped by all the people in the room, racism sucks!) and then, yeah in this world money is mandatory, you need to have some to stay away from troubles. I don’t know what perfect world you live in but quit smoking and come back to real world, you just can’t give lessons to people, stop making the smart guy and try to understand instead of telling everyone the first useless thought that comes up to your mind.
I love that Nathan goes into a self-searching “Guys, I’ve found that life isn’t all about owning things!” paragraph, and all anybody hears is: I’M SELLING FAMICOM TO BECOME UNCLE MONEYBAGS HERO-RAPER”
Stuff is just stuff. It’s only worth the value you ascribe to it. (That’s coming from an artist who makes “stuff” for a living!)
If you are not interest in quick money, you must be selling at a regular Super Famicon price with some extras cartriges, but you gonna telling me, you ate not make quick money with a prize thats superior a playstation 3.
You gotta be kidding…
I know what you mean
i’ve come accross your site through interest of seeing my own name in a zero punctuation..isc review on youtube, i was appalled to see your frankly childish respite to the RE5 review but clicked on your site out of curiousity, i hadn’t read far before i realised your a mac fanboy, please stop defending them, mac are a big boy now, they can look after themselves, they don’t care about critism from anyone else and care even less about people like you, the thought that you even support them in the slightest dictates to me that you have some kind of superiority disorder, Never throw away a working PC people, by all means Smart, throw away your MAC you elitist bastard.
Wow, if your Super Famicom w/ Miyamoto’s signature sold for that amount.
Both my Yoshi’s Island and Zelda: Ocarina of Time should be worth double
